The Washington Style
Written By Evelyn Simmons
Washington, DC is a unique city. There is a certain traditional feel to the neighborhood row houses and historic buildings mixed in with new architectural and glass office buildings. The style somehow blends together and creates a beautiful place.
Ironworking and ornamental ironworking in Washington, DC are no different. The row house in Washington with their cast iron porches, lopped styled fencing with other decorative and traditional ornamental ironwork, can be found in every little neighborhood and side street in the nation’s capital. We fondly refer to this beautiful and traditional ornamental ironworking as the DC Style. Some of the ornamental ironworking that you can find in the city dates back to the mid 1800’s to early 1900’s.
The modern office buildings and newly renovated homes, have a modern and simplistic style. The architectural elements of glass and stainless steel and dark architectural bronze with clean lines and airy buildings are seen in the heart of the city. The decorative and ornamental ironworking is reflected in these modern buildings with glass and stainless-steel railings.
Both the traditional DC Style and the new modern feel are certainly elegant and somehow blend together to form a beautiful city. It’s a unique place in which traditional and historic ornamental ironworking can be still breathtaking while the new, modern architectural feel is pure genius. If you are out and about in the city, take a look around and you’ll notice the beauty of the DC Style.
